26. Windy nights
The car ride was silent and awkward and he wasn't even sure how this set up had come to be. Heather was sitting in the passenger seat, her school books resting heavily upon her lap. And he was driving her home. God knows why Mark or Aarika couldn't. His heap of junk was going to fall apart from this boisterous autumn wind.

"Tell me something, Matt," she suddenly voiced boldly.

Matt graced her with his attention, mostly out of peripheral view since he was driving.

"Yeah?" he answered.

"You like Aarika, don't you? I mean, more than just a skirt to chase, right?"

Straight to the point and two birds with one stone, even! This girl definitely was not all fluff in the head. And he must have been obvious about it for even her to notice. He still did not answer her straight forward.

"Why would it matter if I did?"

"Well, because.. I'd think you'd have a better chance, now that she's not with Josh. And it wouldn't help if you acted all sleazy towards her, if you really do." she answered helpfully.

Matt looked at Heather questionably, eyebrow raised, "Why are you telling me this?"

The blonde blushed under his stare. Curse her for trying to fix things!

"Because, well - well Mark said -"

"Mark? So he's been instilling these crazy ideas in your head?"

"I- well I thought - it seemed so obvious - you two-" she stumbled, her words spilling out like blocks from a bucket. She squeezed her books close to herself.

"That's great and all, Soccerfluff, I mean really. Getting me in with your friend, that's cute," Matt said as he turned his way onto her street, slowly easing up to the blonde girl's house, "but I don't settle for anyone."

"I- I see," Heather replied as the car came to a slow halt, "um, thanks for the ride," she added offhandedly.

He leaned over and jiggled the door open for her. Because sometimes the darn thing got stuck.

"No problem," said Matt who, as the young girl skipped off towards her front door, smiled as the wheels in his head churned and processed all the information given to him in the one short car ride.

No, he didn't settle for just anyone.
